Understanding their happiness….
-Arghya Pal
Men at Burdwan, West Bengal are shy. They produce crops for the
whole country but still struggle to meet their ends. But their resolve
always shines. So do their time-trodden faces. Defining their sukh
(happiness in Bengali) as absence of asukh (illness), they don’t hesitate
in walking barefoot. They never complain about the aches in their
bodies for happiness for them is when their son grows up and gets a job
or their daughters learn to read and teach them how to use a mobile
phone, healthy newborn tears apart the mundane village life with a loud
shriek of life, the drums roll and Goddess Durga comes home in autumn,
bringing them the greatest gift of the year- a promise. They aren’t sure
if their happiness is different from others’. All they know is their wives
look no less than a heroine when they receive a gift of a pair of earrings
bought with their hard earned money. Can’t express much but they
have a huge job in hand, they have to feed many.
