Understanding Coping Mechanisms.
Coping is the process of managing stressful circumstances, a process through which one can solve personal and interpersonal problems by using one’s psychological ability to reduce, manage or tolerate stress or conflict.
Human beings are the most intelligent creatures on the planet. When they find themselves trapped in problem, their coping mechanisms are instantly activated in order to solve the problem, reduce the damage or magnitude of the problem or to simply tolerate and deal with the the situation. Coping mechanism vary from person to person as everyone has their own set of struggles, problems, actions and reactions and different experiences and conditioning, thus, different tackling techniques to deal with stressful situations.
WHY THERE IS NEED FOR US TO HAVE HEALTHY COPING MECHANISMS?
- To handle stressful situations effectively and efficiently
- To avoid mental complications like anxiety and stress etc.
- To safeguard ourselves from any damage whether physical or psychological.
- To face the challenges or serious situations with courage and strong will.
- To achieve positive mental health.
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF COPING MECHANISMS?
There are 2 types of coping mechanisms i.e positive and negative.
- POSITIVE COPING MECHANISM
It is the positive ways or constructive strategies used to deal with stressful events or situations, so that you can successfully tolerate or reduce the stress. These techniques are actually very useful and beneficial for us as it ultimately helps in bringing a good and healthy outcome. Some positive coping techniques include distraction, meditation, self-love, positive self-instruction, believing in ourselves etc.
- NEGATIVE COPING MECHANISMS
It is the negative ways or destructive strategies used to deal with stressful situations, they may have short term benefits but they ultimately affects us and have harmful effects in the long run. They can be immediate short term solution to a problem but you may regret your actions later. Some of the negative coping techniques include self-pity, self-accusation, blaming others, aggression, self-harm, self-medication, drugs and drinking habits etc.
It is very important to note that if you find yourself in a very stressful situation and don’t know how to deal with it, it is necessary you must consult an expert and don’t hesitate asking for help from friends and family because it’s much better to take help than harming yourself or inculcating harmful habits.
