We often come across people in our life who are toxic and pull the other person down and also people who try to empower those around them. It is always dependent on our actions and words that what kind of people we really want to be. People with poor or unstable mental health who are on a verge of being killed by suicide require a lot of motivation and courage to open up you. They would trust you a lot if they were telling you what they are truly feeling. So one should always be careful of what to say to them and what not to say.

There are 5 things that one should never say:

  • Never make taking medication or going to a therapist sound like it’s a big deal for you or people in general.
  • Never compare their miseries with yours’ or any other person’s. Everybody has different kinds of struggles.
  • Never tell them that they are overreacting or panicking unnecessarily because honestly, it is NOT okay to feel suicidal.
  • Never ever tell them that they are doing it just for attention and that there is no such thing as depression. Even if they are doing it for attention, it is still an important concern.
  • Don’t ever threaten them about telling their family or calling the police. It has taken them a lot of courage to open up to you. Respect that fact and give them the space to understand a few things themselves.

More than showing sympathy, it is important you empathize with them and appreciate them opening up to you. You can always support them and try to listen to them. You never know whose world you actually might change.
