Betrayal is the breaking or violation of a presumptive contract, trust, or confidence that produces moral and psychological conflict within a relationship amongst individuals, between organizations or between individuals and organizations.

Impact of betrayal on the receiver’s mental and emotional well-being -

  • Feeling of extreme sadness and having difficulty coping with it.
  • State of shock which could be followed by denial.
  • Wanting to remain in isolation.
  • Damaged self-image which might result in self-criticism.
  • Physical and mental self-harm.
  • Loss of sense of control.
  • Loss of trust and having a negative outlook in general.
  • Anger and stress management issues.

Healthy coping mechanisms to imbibe to deal with betrayal -

• Understand and analyze your feelings instead of running away from the sadness.

• Resist retaliating as revenge has never resulted in any good.

• Examine the betrayal and try to process it by reflecting on things.

• Cut ties with repeat offenders. They aren’t adding any value to your life.

•If you aren’t given closure, let the past remain in the past then, and try moving on.

When you feel betrayed, it’s not something that can be dealt with too quickly. You need time to process everything that has happened and this will vary depending on the specific events.

At first, you just have to do your best to cope with the storm of emotions inside while maintaining some semblance of a normal life. After all, you still have responsibilities to take care of. In time, you’ll find you overcome the initial shock and start to heal your emotional wounds. As you recover from the ordeal, you’ll think less and less about it, and the emotions surrounding it will fade. Eventually, you’ll be able to consign the betrayal to your past or at least for the most part. You may never be able to let go of it entirely, but it will no longer affect your life in any great way.
