Depression in today’s world has become one of the most frequently diagnosed mental health concerns faced by people of all generations. Many either confuse depression with sadness or short term melancholy or don’t want to acknowledge it all. This type of ignorance can be extremely harmful to the overall mental well-being of a person.

What is Depression?

Depression is diagnosed as a mental health concern; which is caused due to the non-adaptive reaction to a painful event and suppressing of one’s emotion. It leads to a feeling of non-stop sadness and lack of interest in activities once enjoyed. It also causes various emotional and physical problems and interferes with a person’s private and social functioning.

Though many times easily confused with sadness, there is a vast difference between being depressed and feeling sad. Grieving or feeling sad after something painful comes rather naturally to humans. It’s a temporary state that may last maximum to a week or two. But depression which is caused by the suppression of emotions and not letting them out in a healthy manner may last months or even years if not treated in time.

If symptoms like feeling irritable/restless, losing interest in favourite activities, decrease or increase in sleep and appetite, inability to concentrate or having suicidal thoughts frequently last for more than two weeks the person may be diagnosed for depression.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, “Depression affects an estimated one in 15 adults (6.7%) in any given year. And one in six people (16.6%) will experience depression at some time in their lives. Depression can strike at any time, but on average, first appears during the late teens to the mid-20s. Women are more likely than men to experience depression. Some studies show that one-third of women will experience a major depressive episode in their lifetime”. Some likely reasons for depression include childhood trauma, continuous exposure to violence/abuse, lack of acceptance in private/public spheres or/and inability to cope from devastating events like death.
