We live in a society where we fail to value Mental Health. We believe that if an individual does not have a breakdown, or falls apart or shows any form of vulnerability, they are completely okay. This is probably why serious mental illnesses go unattended. One such illness is depression.

Depression is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease your ability to function at work and at home. One in six people will experience depression at some time in their life. This is how common it is .

There is no single reason for depression.

It could be because of something that affected you so deep when you were a child, or because of something that someone did or said , maybe loss of loved ones or betrayal . It can start with the smallest of struggles eventually leading onto affecting us to the point of completely consuming us holistically. Depression is difficult to identify, there are times we can openly notice someone’s change of behaviour but for the rest of it, it’s difficult to reflect on it, it’s difficult to spot it, which is why it makes it extremely imperative for each of us to be attentive and compassionate towards the people we love and care about.

Recovering from depression isn’t quick or easy, but that does not mean it is impossible. There are various ways to deal with depression. The most important way is to reach out for help. This does not mean that you are weak but it shows how courageous you are to face your challenges. Another way is by challenging your negative feelings, thoughts and emotions. Prove yourself that you are strong and can endure and face the challenges thrown in your way and that nothing can hold you back . Engaging yourself in activities that you like, would distract and help you see the goodness in life. Spending time with loved ones is beneficial as well .

Remember healing does not happen overnight. It is a slow process . You are not alone, there are many people going through the same or maybe worse. Things are not always going to be like this. This too shall pass. Have hope and fight for yourself.
