Changing Your Therapist Is Okay

A therapist serves as an authentic, genuine, empathetic individual who is unbiased, supportive, and, can provide objective, non judgmental guidance and assisting clients with desired changes. A therapist-client relationship may not always work out and it is completely normal to change one’s therapist. Sometimes the therapist can be too impersonal or overly familiar or isn’t listening to what is being conveyed, judgmental, pushing his/her own values on the client or makes the client feel uncomfortable. A poor therapeutic relationship may hold the client back by reinforcing negative thought patterns; it will also prevent him/her from getting the help he/she actually needs.

If in case the client feels that he/she is not making any progress even after a long period of time, it is recommended that he/she should switch. Therapy can be a long process, but usually the client is working towards a defined finish line. It is better to switch to another therapist once the client realizes that he/she isn’t making any progress before it’s too late. Holding onto something who you are unsure about does more damage.

A change is always needed for a person to develop. It is a part of everyone’s life. Your relationship with your therapist is very different from other relationships but one thing is the same: sometimes you need a change. Don’t be afraid of change. If at all you are placing your therapist on a pedestal and have high expectations from them, and you probably feel like those expectations are not being fulfilled then you certainly need to make a change. Nobody is going to judge you. Use the end of this “relationship” to determine what you’re looking for in a therapist. Sometimes you just don’t fit well with another person, and it’s okay to use this experience to figure out what might work better . The ultimate goal of therapy is to heal, or alleviate, symptoms of a concerning issue or condition and self development.
